Findings from an ActionAid study say that Brazil, China, and India (in that order) score the highest in the study. US scores 8 out of 100 for eradicating poverty within its borders. Pretty crappy compared to other developed countries.

there is an excellent chapter (Class in India, Chapter 10) in Amartya Sen's book The Argumentative Indian that deals with this issue--chronic malnutrition vs. famine, on the one hand, then what policies have led to India having such a high level of hungry while having some of the highest amounts of grain reserves in the world. - kai
